Mobile data in Uganda: what to know

01

Networks, coverage and how the eSIM fits

Airtel/Warid Uganda carries most of the country's mobile traffic, with solid 4G in Kampala, Entebbe and the main regional towns. Coverage holds up reasonably well along the main highways but thins out fast inside the national parks, and it can disappear almost entirely on the trek in to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Rafting and adventure activities around Jinja and the source of the Nile sit close enough to town to stay connected, but the parks further out, Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth among them, are a different story. Kampala's airport arrivals area still means the usual SIM queue and passport check.

The eSIM installed before the flight attaches to the local network the moment the plane lands at Entebbe, no counter and no passport involved. That covers maps around Kampala's traffic, translation apps, and staying reachable on the drive out to a gorilla trekking permit briefing. The physical SIM keeps handling calls throughout the trip, so nothing about a home number changes while the eSIM carries the data in the background.

02

Buying a SIM locally vs. this eSIM

SIM registration is mandatory across East Africa, and Uganda follows the same pattern: a passport at the point of sale, tied to the buyer's identity before the line activates. A travel eSIM does not touch any of it, since the roaming partner handles the network side abroad; nothing is registered, and no counter or form is involved on arrival.

Questions

Uganda eSIM, answered

Does a Uganda eSIM require KYC or ID?

No. This is a data-only travel eSIM — no identity document, no local registration step for you in Uganda. You hold an anonymous token account funded in cryptocurrency, and each order is identified by a random code. That code is the only thing linking you to the purchase.

Which networks does it use in Uganda?

Your eSIM connects to Airtel/Warid Uganda — the best available signal is selected automatically. Coverage and speed come from the local carrier, exactly like any SIM sold in the country.

When does the plan start, and can I top it up?

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Uganda, not when you buy — order before you fly. Every pack lasts 30 days and can be topped up anytime from the same order page, paid the same anonymous way.

Can I share the connection (hotspot)?

Yes. Tethering and hotspot work normally, and the eSIM runs alongside your physical SIM, so your number, calls and WhatsApp keep working while the data flows through the Uganda eSIM.

Will the eSIM work during gorilla trekking in Bwindi?

Coverage is unreliable once the trek leaves the trailhead, since the forest and terrain block a consistent signal. Expect no data for most of the trek itself, with connectivity returning near the park gate and lodges rather than deep inside Bwindi.

Is mobile data reliable in Uganda's national parks generally?

It varies by park. Areas near lodges, gates and main tracks in places like Murchison Falls typically get some coverage, but it thins out quickly away from those points. Treat data as intermittent on any multi-day safari and download what is needed beforehand.
