Mobile data in China: what to know
Networks, coverage and how the eSIM fits
China's mobile network is split between three state-linked giants — China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom — which between them cover the country's cities comprehensively, including extensive 5G in Beijing, Shanghai, and other major hubs. The high-speed rail network keeps a signal for most of a journey, and metro systems are well covered. Reception thins out in the far west, Tibet, and other mountainous or sparsely populated regions, and tourist SIM counters at major airports can mean a long queue after a long flight.
The eSIM installs before departure and connects to one of the three networks on landing, skipping that queue and the passport copy a counter purchase would require. It is useful for Didi, the ride-hailing app that replaced Uber in China, for navigation in cities where street signs are not always in English, and for scanning entry QR codes. One thing it does not change: China's internet filtering applies to the connection itself, not to how the SIM was bought, so plan around that rather than around the SIM.
Buying a SIM locally vs. this eSIM
Buying a Chinese SIM in person means a passport plus a facial scan at the counter — real-name registration is standard for any new number in mainland China, prepaid included. A travel eSIM does not go through that process: it is a foreign-issued profile that roams onto the local networks the same way a home carrier would, so there is no Chinese registration record and no counter visit. Note that this covers identity registration only, not content filtering — see does a travel eSIM bypass internet censorship? for what still applies at the network level.
Questions
China eSIM, answered
Does a China eSIM require KYC or ID?
No. This is a data-only travel eSIM — no identity document, no local registration step for you in China. You hold an anonymous token account funded in cryptocurrency, and each order is identified by a random code. That code is the only thing linking you to the purchase.
Which networks does it use in China?
Your eSIM connects to China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom — the best available signal is selected automatically. Coverage and speed come from the local carrier, exactly like any SIM sold in the country.
When does the plan start, and can I top it up?
Validity starts when the eSIM first connects in China, not when you buy — order before you fly. Every pack lasts 30 days and can be topped up anytime from the same order page, paid the same anonymous way.
Can I share the connection (hotspot)?
Yes. Tethering and hotspot work normally, and the eSIM runs alongside your physical SIM, so your number, calls and WhatsApp keep working while the data flows through the China eSIM.
Will WhatsApp or Google Maps work on the eSIM in China?
No — both are blocked by China's national filtering, which applies to every connection inside the country regardless of which SIM or carrier it uses. A VPN installed before arrival is the standard workaround; VPN app stores are themselves hard to reach once you have landed.
Does the eSIM require the same real-name registration as a Chinese SIM?
No. Real-name registration with a passport and facial scan applies to numbers bought inside China. A travel eSIM is issued abroad and roams onto the local network under a roaming agreement, so it never enters that local registration system.
